A slow website costs you visitors and search rankings. Here are the most common causes I see when auditing WordPress sites, and how to fix them.
## 1. Unoptimized Images
Large, uncompressed images are the number one cause of slow load times. Resize images to the dimensions they’re actually displayed at, and compress them before uploading.
## 2. Too Many Plugins
Every active plugin adds some amount of load time. Review your plugin list regularly and remove anything you no longer use.
## 3. No Caching
Without a caching solution, WordPress rebuilds pages from scratch on every visit. A caching plugin can dramatically reduce load times for returning visitors.
## 4. Bloated Page Builders
Heavy page builder templates can output excessive CSS and JavaScript. Keep sections lean and avoid stacking unnecessary widgets.
## 5. Poor Hosting
Shared hosting with limited resources will always struggle under real traffic. If your site is consistently slow, hosting is often the root cause.
If you’re not sure where your site stands, running a speed test is a good first step before making any changes.
