This is one of the most common questions I get from clients starting an online store. Both are solid platforms, but they suit different situations.
## WooCommerce
WooCommerce runs on WordPress, so you own your data and hosting outright, and there’s no monthly platform fee — just hosting and any paid plugins you choose. It’s more flexible but needs a bit more setup and maintenance.
## Shopify
Shopify is a fully hosted platform — everything is managed for you, including security and updates, for a monthly subscription. It’s faster to launch but you’re more limited to what the platform and its app ecosystem allow.
## My Rule of Thumb
If you already have a WordPress site or want full control long-term, WooCommerce usually makes sense. If you want the fastest path to selling online with minimal technical upkeep, Shopify is a strong choice.
Either way, the product photography, pricing clarity and checkout experience matter more to conversions than the platform itself.
